Why It Matters
Choose the tap for the basin, not the other way round
A beautiful tap on the wrong basin splashes, drips on the rim or barely reaches the centre of the bowl. Most tap problems come from pairing a standard-height mixer with a vessel basin, or a short spout with a deep kitchen sink.
Settle three things first: how the basin is mounted, the spout height and reach it needs, and your water pressure. Finish and style come after, and are where the fun is.

Step 01
Check the mounting
Does the basin or counter have a tap hole? If yes, a deck-mounted mixer. If not, a wall-mounted spout with the valve in the wall.
Step 02
Match the height
Standard mixers suit basins set into or level with the counter. Vessel basins need a tall mixer of about 300 mm or more.
Step 03
Measure the reach
Measure from the tap hole to the centre of the bowl, usually 12-18 cm for a basin and 20 cm or more for a kitchen sink.
Step 04
Know your pressure
Tank-fed homes often have low pressure. Single-lever mixers with a standard cartridge cope well; some high-flow designs need a pump.

Solid brass single-lever basin mixers are the entry point. Tall, antique and kitchen mixers cost more for the extra brass and the pull-down spray; bath-shower mixers include the diverter and hand shower. All prices include VAT.

A pillar tap delivers either hot or cold water from its own spout, so a basin needs two of them. A mixer blends hot and cold inside the body and delivers them through one spout, controlled by a single lever or two handles. Almost every modern basin, kitchen and bath fitting sold today is a mixer.
Standard basin mixers (around 150-200 mm tall) suit undermount, drop-in, semi-pedestal and most wall-hung basins with a tap hole. A vessel basin sits 10-15 cm above the counter, so it needs a tall mixer of about 300 mm or more, or a wall-mounted spout, otherwise the water lands on the basin rim.
Yes, but check before you buy. Many Kenyan homes run on gravity-fed tanks with low pressure. Single-lever mixers with a standard ceramic cartridge and a simple aerator work well on low pressure, while some high-flow thermostatic and waterfall designs need a pump. Brushed and matte finishes (matte black, gun grey, brushed nickel) hide water spots and fingerprints better than polished chrome. Chrome is the most durable and the easiest to wipe but shows every drop. Antique and bronze finishes suit hard-water areas because mineral marks blend into the patina.
Single-lever basin mixers in solid brass start around KES 6,500. Tall vessel mixers and statement antique designs run KES 8,900 to 12,000. Pull-down and swan-neck kitchen mixers run KES 8,900 to 17,000, and bath-shower mixers KES 12,500 to 24,000. All prices include VAT.
